Striped – Road to Hana

Rainbow eucalyptus are a popular attraction along the Road to Hana.  Sadly, these trees have also become a popular spot for graffiti artists, who etch their initials into the vibrant multicolored bark.  In fact, it’s increasingly difficult to find a tree that hasn’t been defaced by vandals.

To circumvent these man-made scars, I used a panning technique to create an abstract triptych.  These photos highlight the the beauty of the innate trees — the striped bands of color.

Description

Rainbow eucalyptus are a popular roadside attraction along Maui’s Hana Coast.  Sadly, these trees have also become a popular spot for graffiti artists, who etch their initials into the trees’ multicolored bark.  In fact, it’s increasingly difficult to find a tree that hasn’t been defaced by vandals.

On a recent trip to the Ke’anae Arboretum, I was greeted with particularly vibrant bark. There were shades of blue, green, red, and purple. But, I needed away to circumvent the man-made scars, so I experimented with several different techniques.  In the end, I came away with several photos that captured the color of the trees without the graffiti.  Though all three images were taken at different trees, the shared color palettes — the shades of green, blue, purple, and red — highlight the beauty of the Hana Coast.
